Soar Pipe Organ Digital Capture

Goetze and Gwynn Organ builders

The brief for this project was to digitally capture the restoration of the historic Peter Conacher organ at Capel Soar in Merthyr Tydful.  The organ dates from 1890.  It is on 3/4 levels and the wind for the instrument is provided by three methods, hand pump, water engine and electric blower.  The work was carried out by Goetze and Gwynn between 2020 and 2021.  The organ removal and subsequent restoration was photographed and filmed by me, with videos being produced to share via Canolfan Soar and Theatr Soar's social media.  These included films about how the restorers used leather binding, information about the water engine and how the pipe organ was turned on when all the components were returned and replaced. The project was fascinating, when the organ was removed it was essentially in original condition and for over 100 years it had performed to its congregation until falling silent in the late 20th Century.  It is now fully restored and is being played to new audiences at Theatr Soar.  The archive of photographs and video is now with Theatr Soar.
